‘We Could Not Afford A Designer’, Shah Rukh Khan Reveals How Gauri’s Designing Journey Began

The power couple SRK-Gauri has given us yet another reason to ship them.

Gauri Khan recently launched her new coffee table book, My Life In Design.

Gauri Khan’s interior design career has spanned two decades and includes A-list clients like Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar and Nita Ambani.

Her journey began when she designed Mannat, her family home, which has become a popular tourist attraction. Her debut book, My Life in Design, published by Penguin Random House, offers readers a behind-the-scenes tour of the iconic property.

Shah Rukh Khan, is excited to see what’s included, joking that he’ll demand a discounted makeover if she’s designed a space better than his.

But did you know such an exquisite journey had really humble beginnings?

A Twitter user, who shared the foreword from the book has Shah Rukh discussing, “Needless to say, it was beyond our means, but we needed a living space because we were expecting Aryan. So, the choice was made, that we would try and buy stuff as and when we had the money. We could not afford a designer so the job was taken over by Gauri”.

With their first home, the couple couldn’t afford a professional designer, so Gauri took on the job herself, starting with a leather sofa she designed and had built by a carpenter.

Even when they purchased their current home, Mannat, financial constraints led Gauri to don the designer hat once again.

Shah Rukh acknowledged that, despite eventually hiring professionals, Gauri’s passion for design grew and expanded

Shah Rukh praised Gauri’s determination and acknowledged that, with the scope of work increasing, they eventually hired other professional designers and architects.

Gauri also hosted a show called Dream Homes With Gauri Khan where she gave a makeover to celebrity homes and we also saw a glimpse of her design store in Netflix’s Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.

They say that necessity is the mother of all inventions. But the power duo who tied the knot in 1991, proved

that with support, perseverance and determination, necessity can also culminate into great innovative business ventures.

Kudos to the couple and we can’t wait to read the book to know more insights!
