The St. Tammany Parish sheriff investigating vandalism at a Mandeville synagogue

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help locating a person caught on camera allegedly spray painting graffiti on a Mandeville synagogue April 16.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook Tuesday that it is investigating the vandalism incident at the Northshore Jewish Congregation. The person who was caught on camera is believed to have left the scene in a dark-colored Honda Civic. The spray painting took place around 1:30 a.m.

As for the graffiti itself: “It wasn’t anti-Semitic at all,” said sheriff’s spokesperson Suzanne Carboni. Rather, the person spray painted “some words and letters that didn’t make sense.”

“It’s not really clear what was written,” Carboni said, adding that the person “was obviously not a professional artist.”

The synagogue was the target of anti-Semitic spray-painted graffiti in 2018. An 18-year-old was arrested in connection with that incident in 2020.
