  • Art Basel is an art show that attracts very wealthy people to Miami each year.
  • It’s a great time to mingle and (hopefully) make connections and money.
  • Snagging an invite can be hard. Here are six parties the financial set are vying to attend.

Miami Art Week is here, and Wall Street millionaires are hopping on private jets to the Magic City for days of mansion parties, yacht rides, and really expensive artwork.

At the beginning of December each year, some of the most influential art goes on display in Miami — hundreds of art fairs, galleries, and installations are sprawled around the city, including the famed Art Basel exhibit.

High-brow art and millionaires tend to go hand in hand, so Art Week also means some of the world’s wealthiest come out to play. It’s the perfect storm to attract Wall Street elite (and wannabes) — a chance to escape winter weather, feel sophisticated by staring at abstract sculptures, and mingle in a city that has become an increasingly prominent financial hub.

Displays of excess are all around, from the luxury sports cars to the designer clothes and the yachts flooding Biscayne Bay. There’s also an endless supply of events, ranging from gallery mixers to brunches and galas — as well as ornate parties thrown on hotel rooftops, at beachside mansions, and in ultra-exclusive nightclubs.

Last year, the annual Nylon party (details for this year’s party below) reportedly hosted celebs like Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams, and pop star Ciara. Some big-name firms, like JPMorgan and UBS, will often host smaller, more private events exclusively for their high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients. That might be a small dinner at a five-star restaurant or a catered cocktail event on a yacht.

This year, Art Basel will start on Friday, December 8, but the most exclusive and on-the-DL parties take place much earlier, according to James Koutoulas, founder of the hedge fund Typhon Capital Management in Miami, who is also hosting a terrace party that will have mostly financiers in attendance.

“The real elite come Monday through Thursday. They leave before the main Basel show even opens on Friday because the very wealthy people don’t want to be with the hordes,” Koutoulas said. “People with real money hate traffic, and Miami’s not a helicopter-friendly city.”

Many of those parties are not publicized and Koutoulas declined to share the ones he knows about, saying he didn’t want the backlash that could come from divulging.

Regardless of the events you attend, Art Basel week is a great time to mingle and do business, explained Jasmina Midzic, Typhon’s director of Investor Relations. She said she’ll go to a few big parties, but also focus on meeting with investors and business acquaintances who’ve flown in for the week.

“I’ll have lunch with investors that are in town or go to some work events that are organized by private equity funds, venture capital funds, and banks,” she said. “I have friends who are tech entrepreneurs and they have investors in town and clients in town. So they won’t party, they will mainly focus on meetings with their investors and clients.”

Firms who aren’t throwing parties will be working to give their most valued clients the royal treatment, she said. “It’ll mainly be focused on taking investors where they want. So if your investors tell you, ‘I want to go to a VIP art show,’ you better find a way to get him into that VIP art show.”

Of course, getting into even the well-publicized events can be a feat. First you must receive an invite link. Then you must RSVP. In some instances, you must pay to RSVP, and that alone doesn’t guarantee entry — you have to be approved by the host in most cases.

“It’s almost like a competitive sport here in Miami. It’s like, what parties can you get into?” said Koutoulas. “People are constantly chasing clout and they want to Instagram that they’re at the best parties and they’re with wealthy people.”

Many party links won’t even reveal the party address on the invite. That’s something you will only gain access to if you are admitted, which is why many invites list locale as “TBA” or “secret location.” Others hosts require people to fill out personal information on the app Partiful, including Instagram handle and the name of someone you know with an inside connection. Koutoulas says these barriers are put up to maintain an air of exclusivity and prevent events getting out of control. There’s a big “crashing culture” at Art Week, he said.

“As soon as someone gets invited to a party, they send it to 10 other people,” he said. “There’s this whole back and forth between making sure you get the people who you want there and keeping out the crashers.”

Here are 6 Art Basel parties the Wall Street elite and wannabes alike are vying to attend. The list is in chronological order by date and time.

Typhon Penthouse Party
Wednesday, December 6 from 5 – 8 p.m.
Invite Only
Unknown Address near South Beach

Of course, Koutoulas said his party will be the best. Typhon and iConnections, a software platform which hosts an annual alternative investment conference in Miami as part of Miami Hedge Fund Week, are putting it on.

It’s at his personal home, an apartment near South Beach with a 2,200-foot terrace. There will be “lavish cuisine” and three bars set up. It’s early, he said, to show off his sunset view and avoid people getting too wild.

Koutoulas said there will be 150 to 200 people there, “mostly hedge fund managers.” Midzic, who has been helping plan the party, said she thinks it will end up being more like 300.

DJs Blondish and Ameme will be performing at the event, which is happening at a mysterious address described only as a “Miami Venetian Waterfront Estate.”

To get in you’ll need to know someone — “all guests must be approved in advance” and they’ll be checking your ID at the door to prove you’re on the list.

Nylon House

The party’s namesake is Nylon, a digital magazine, which hosted the event last year at Strawberry Moon and reportedly had guests like Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams, Bella Thorne, and Ciara.

The event is presented by e.l.f. Cosmetics, which will give away beauty products, and there will be an open bar and “the Mona Lisa of disco balls.” DJs Rampa, Desiree, Talon, and Luciano Scalioni will be performing, according to a private invite reviewed by Business Insider.

Midzic said this is “THE party of Art Basel” — Bryan Goldberg, who owns Bustle Digital Group and is organizing the party, posted on his Instagram that “we had 5,905 requests and could only accept 25% of them.”
