The Architect’s Role in Enhancing Historical Urban Centers

The architect as a professional figure of reference but above all of significant control over the quality of projects aimed at the protection and enhancement of the cultural heritage of historic centers. This is the theme of the meeting ‘The Identity of Places in Historic Centers. Perspectives on Urban Enhancement of Our Cities’ Historical and Cultural Heritage’ which will be attended by architects and representatives of institutions, on May 2nd at 9.30 am at the Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore in Naples. The activities of the Historical Center and Cultural Heritage Commission of the Order of Architects of Naples and Province, chaired by Paola Marzullo, in agreement with the guidelines defined by the President of the Order of Architects Lorenzo Capobianco, have among their programmatic objectives, to be pursued in the medium and long term, the opportunity to give centrality to the architect’s figure in interventions on areas and artifacts of significant historical-cultural and social interest to guarantee the quality of the project itself. At the same time, the Commission believes it is necessary in these contexts to perfect the synergy between the city’s stakeholders and the adoption of interventions that adopt measures of technological and environmental sustainability aimed at enhancing the cultural heritage, a real driving force for the development of the entire territory of the historic centers. The role of the architect would therefore guarantee the quality of the interventions and choices and would be an essential point of reference for administrations and citizens. In this perspective of collaboration, the dialogue that the Order of Architects of Naples has established with the Campania Region, the Municipality of Naples, the Archaeological and Fine Arts Superintendence of Naples, and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii was fundamental especially regarding the importance of knowledge of the history of places and the adoption of sustainable and quality projects, which enhance the cultural heritage and, through this, the identity of the historic centers of our cities. ‘How is it possible that the immense historical-cultural-archaeological heritage of our urban centers is not a significant resource for the work activity not only for the architect – explains Paola Marzullo – but also for those other professional figures directly or indirectly related to the promotion and enhancement of goods of considerable interest. There is above all a lack of dialogue and confrontation between the entities and institutions that operate in the territories and that act each for their own competence without almost ever confronting each other. This has led to results that have not significantly impacted the regeneration of historic centers in terms of improving the quality of life of citizens and the induced.’
