St. Clair Potters Market set for October

The St. Clair Art Association will continue with its planned 2023 Potters Market in October, thanks to assistance from community members.

“The roof on the St. Clair Riverview Plaza in St. Clair was damaged by hail storm on July 14,” the association said in a news release. “Many businesses were affected with water damage, causing store closures around the mall. The Alice Moore Art Center, home of the St. Clair Art Association, was one of them.”

The St. Clair Art Association managed to host its 52nd annual St. Clair Art Fair, which was combined with the sixth annual Jazz Festival, on Aug. 19 and 20.

“But following through with the Potters Market was doubtful because of continuing roof leaks,” the association said. “Kris Paul, owner of War Water Brewery, generously offered to host the event in his establishment. Thank you, Kris.”

Additionally, Heather Bernhardt, owner of Blackbird Home Goods, has organized an Art Walk in the plaza on Oct. 14 that will take place within the Potters Market. Merchants worked together to create the fundraiser to help the St. Clair Art Association.

During the event, participating merchants will showcase a local artist in their store. Each artist will sell their work and will donate one piece of their art to be raffled off. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the St. Clair Art Association.

“It’s rare that any other mall would have merchants that would be this generous,” the release states. “Many of them are hurting from the storm, too. Yet, they are still willing to lend a helping hand.”

The Potters Market will take place at War Water Brewery, with a membership preview night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 12 and the 2023 grand opening from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 13. The market will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 14 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 15.

“Eighteen potters have been chosen for their excellent and unique work,” the association said. “Some potters are local, but many are from areas like Clinton Township, Ann Arbor, Macomb, Rochester, Royal Oak, Detroit, St. Clair Shores and Lakeport. Proceeds from this market will be used to support the pottery program at the Alice Moore Center for the Arts.”

The featured Potters Market artist, Dan Saultman, will speak at Mannina’s Wine House in the Riverview Plaza mall on Sept. 23. Saultman’s talk is part of the SCAA lecture series; he will share his perspective on his world of pottery. The meet and greet starts at 2 p.m., with appetizers and a cash bar. Seating is limited, so those interested are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected] by Sept. 20.
