Burbank Airport Long-Awaited Replacement Design Chosen

It appears the Burbank Airport is about to become a bit more iconic. Following public review, the long-awaited new design for locals’ favorite airport has been selected, dubbed “The Icon.”

Inspiration for “The Icon” was drawn from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, recognizing the “film industry’s roots” and touching on a time reminiscent of the silver screen.” The winning selection comes from the design-build team of Corgan, IHolder, Pankow, TEC, CannonDesign, and Burns & McDonnell.

“The Commission looked at what would be a ‘statement of arrival’,” Emily Gabel-Luddy, Burbank Commissioner and President of the BGPAA said. “‘The Icon’ affords that statement with its roofline and its deep shadow-giving cover over the plaza and arrival point, but also how it goes across the face of the parking structure.”

The project, called Elevate BUR, was approved by voters in November 2016. It will include a new 355,000-square foot terminal with 14 passenger gates, new parking facilities, a replacement airline cargo building, maintenance facilities for ground service equipment, and other ancillary features.
