Axes, comic books and puppies, oh my! Check out these 13 events this May in Onslow County

The month of May might bring flowers and showers, but it also brings fun for the people of Onslow County. 

From pirates to axes, comic books and puppies, there is truly something for everyone this month. Check out these 13 events happening in and around Onslow County in the coming weeks. 

Lejeune Memorial Gardens Tour

It’s the 40th Annual National Travel & Tourism Week, and Onslow County Tourism is celebrating with a variety of events. 

Beginning on May 9 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., join Visit Jacksonville Tourism Development Authority on a guided tour of the Lejeune Memorial Gardens, located at 109 Montford Landing Road. 

According to Onslow County Tourism, the gardens are a place to reflect and honor American military servicemen and women in light of the sacrifices they have made in defense of our country and freedoms. 

Beach Clean-Up 

Onslow County Tourism will also be hosting a beach clean-up event on May 11 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Beach Access #4, located at 484 New River Inlet Road in North Topsail Beach. 

The event is part of their ongoing commitment to the preservation of natural resources. Onslow County Tourism is partnering with Hampton Inn & Suites – Sneads Ferry/North Topsail Beach to hold the event. 

New River Splash Triathlon, Duathlon & 5K 

Onslow County Tourism’s third event of the week will be a New River Splash Triathlon, Duathlon & 5K on May 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at 36 Kerr Street in Jacksonville. 

The Moore Buick GMC New River Splash Triathlon will begin with the swim portion in the New River. The cycling portion will go through MCB Camp Lejeune, and the run will be through downtown Jacksonville. 

The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. 

Onslow County Pirate Fest 

Onslow County Tourism’s final event will be the Onslow County Pirate Fest on May 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 144 Front Street in Swansboro. 

Onslow County and Swansboro Parks and Recreation Departments are presenting the Pirate Fest, and they’re in need of shipmates to swab the deck, walk the plank and hunt for pirate treasure.

According to Onslow County Tourism, this free family-friendly event also includes games and activities, pirate shows, live music, pirate encampments and mermaids.

1st Annual Onslow County Public Library Comic Book Fest

On May 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Onslow County Public Library, all four library branches will host the 1st Annual Comic Book Fest. 

According to the OCPL, the event will have games, activities, contests and more. Some of the activities will include trivia, arts and crafts, vendors, food trucks and a costume contest. 

All those who attend are encouraged to dress up as their favorite comic book or graphic novel character.

Mother’s Day Tea Party 

The Little Gym of Jacksonville, located at 1092 Hampton Inn Way, Suite 100 in Jacksonville, will hold a Mother’s Day Tea Party on May 13 at 5:30 p.m. 

The event is open to all The Little Gym kids, aged four months to 12-years-old, along with their mothers. 

According to The Little Gym, nonmembers can still participate by calling or texting to get signed up and prepared. There will be food at the event and anyone whose child has an allergy should contact The Little Gym ahead of time.

Big Axe Meet Return 

The Flip’n Axe, located at 305 Blue Creek School Road in Jacksonville, is holding an event on May 13 at 7 p.m.
Those interested in attending will enjoy axes, brisket and cars. All makes and models are welcome, and S.O.B. BBQ will be on site serving food.

Mother’s Day Skate 

Roller City of Jacksonville, located at 120 Bridget Lane, will hold a Mother’s Day Skate on May 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. 

All moms skate free, with the exception of the $3 skate rental.

Sunset Market and Car Market 

On May 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Marine Federal Credit Union, located at 4180 Western Boulevard in Jacksonville, a Sunset Market and Car Market will be held for Onslow County Animal Services. 

All proceeds will be donated to OCAS, and dogs will be adoptable. There will also be music, photos, yard games, face painting, vendors, food and fun for the whole family. 

The event is free for the public. 

Kick Off To Summer Pawlooza

Adoption First Animal Rescue, located at 100 Fall Creek Drive in Jacksonville, is holding a Kick Off to Summer Pawlooza on May 20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
According to Adoption First, the event will begin with a yard sale, and will be followed by a BBQ & bake sale, dog wash, adoption event and low-cost vaccine clinic at 11 a.m.

Moves That Matter Yard Sale Event for CHEW

On May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Great Moves Realty, located at 1132 Western Boulevard, a Yard Sale Event will be held for CHEW, Children Healthy on Weekends. 

All proceeds will be donated to CHEW and donations can be dropped off Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Arts at the Ampitheatre: 2nd Marine Division Band

On May 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jacksonville Commons Ampitheatre, the first summer Arts at the Ampitheatre event will take place with the 2nd Marine Division Band. 

According to Jacksonville Recreation & Parks, those interested should grab a blanket or lawn chair and head to the amphitheater for an evening of music and fun. Concessions will be available for purchase and lawn games will be on site for everyone to enjoy. 

Jacksonville Recreation and Parks will also kick off their summer movie series with Encanto on May 19 at 7 p.m.

RVFD Craft and Car Show 

The Richlands Volunteer Fire Department will be holding a Craft and Car Show on May 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
