BREWER — The Brewer Police Department says they’ve developed a person of interest after surveillance cameras captured a man on the evening of Monday, July 1st leaving graffiti on a wall behind a fenced-in area under an overpass on the Brewer Riverwalk.

“There’s a time and a place for artwork,” said Brewer Police Department Patrol Sergeant Amy Nickerson. “On public property or private property that is not the place for it.”

“Someone reported seeing some graffiti in behind the fencing on the tunnel on our waterfront. We sent officers down to take a look at it and there was in fact some graffiti back there,” said Sergeant Nickerson. “We discovered that the person had entered on the river side of the bridge. It’s a misdemeanor crime. It’s not a felony or anything like that but we plan on holding the person who did this accountable.”

The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for covering up graffiti. According to Director Michael Martin, it took roughly one hour to cover it up once they were able to gain access.

“One of the difficult parts on this one was we had to wait for low tide to get in. There’s a little back gate to go in so we had to wait for the water to go down to gain access to it but after that, it was a one-hour clean up, roughly,” said Martin. “Our policy is we try to clean it up as soon as we see it or get reported and I think it helps keep the incidents down.”

According to Sergeant Nickerson, the police department is not releasing images of the graffiti.

“We keep a pretty tight reign on our waterfront,” said Sergeant Nickerson. “We’re very proud of it, it’s beautiful, and we want to keep it that way.”

The Brewer Police Department is directing those with information about Monday’s incident to its Facebook page.
