Area news in brief for Aug. 3

BACKPACK GIVEAWAY – The 19th annual Community Backpack Giveaway will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Alliance Friends Church. Organizers will be handing out backpacks and basic school supplies, along with lunch. This year, for the fourth consecutive year, the event is completely community-sponsored. Each item is financially sponsored and manned by community businesses, groups and clubs. In 2022, 1,091 backpacks were handed out.

WASHINGTON TRUSTEES – Washington Township trustees and fiscal officer plan a work session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Township Administration Building. Purpose of the meeting includes the 2024 alternative tax budget, a Bureau of Workers Compensation claim, the OTARMA risk management assessment and Beechwood Playground pavilion rentals.  

STREAMSIDE MAINTENANCE – Stark Soil & Water Conservation District plans a streamside maintenance program at 6 p.m. Aug. 17 at the USDA Service Center Conference Room, 2650 Richville Drive SE in Massillon. Learn tips and strategies to help maintain your streamside land. Topics will include how to stabilize streambanks, repair damage from erosion, and prevent future erosion while adding aesthetic beauty to your backyard. Sign up at www.starkswcd.org or 330-451-7645.

MINERVA NIGHTS – The Village of Minerva will celebrate Second Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. Visit downtown Minerva for Nights on North Market, featuring live music, art, food, drink and shopping. The Market Street Art Spot plans a reception from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring its Beyond Glass group exhibit of the work of Jennifer Collins, Hannah Greenbaum, and Anne Richeson Scanlon, live music by JT and Dave, and light refreshments. A popup pocket park will be set up on West High Street, between North Market and Main streets, with the Daniel Grey Trio playing from 6 to 9 p.m. Events will include family games and activities. Local crafters and vendors will be set up on High Street and in Minerva Perk’s Next Door. Ducks will be for sale for the Oktoberfest Roxy Theatre Duck Race, and there will be a kids movie in the theater at 7 p.m. The village’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area will be in effect from 5 to 10 p.m. For more information, contact the Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce at 330-868-7979 or [email protected].

NO MEETING − There will be no meeting of the City of Alliance Board of Zoning Appeals in August. No appeals have been submitted.
